Textbooks have accessories, too
Textbooks, not the most chic products in the publishing industry, are getting ready for a makeover. No longer will they be heavy, hardback books filling knapsacks and causing students to slouch over. They will be bright, colorful, moving, engaging. They will be diverse worlds of text, videos, games, quizzes, and social interaction.
According to a study by Outsell, a research firm focused on the publishing industry, the shift from paper to digital textbooks is accelerating. Describing paper textbooks, Outsell’s lead analyst said, “Essentially, we have been educating the next generation using methods suitable to the industrial revolution, not to the knowledge economy.”
Although we think traditional textbooks still have value, we are curious about the concept of teaching by amusement and the potential of electronic products, from computers and smartphones to e-readers and tablets, to make the learning process more individual and effective.
We will discuss our own involvement in this revolution at a future date.
