I’m gazing longingly at the Folio Society website, particularly this lovely clothbound edition of Le Grand Meaulnes by Alain-Fournier, illustrated by Laura Carlin.

Carlin’s work reminds me of Ludwig Bemelmans’s slanting, loose, and moody Madeline illustrations.

. . . And I mean that in the best possible way. Everyone has influences; after all, Bemelmans was (apparently) influenced by Raoul Dufy, who was (definitely) influenced by Matisse:
